Our Journey

A shared record of the learning, conversations and hopes shaping a renewed AOPSI for First Nations children, families and communities.

Guiding principles

Collective Intentions & Best Hopes

Shared intentions from the January 20 engagement: centre children and youth, ground the standards in culture and Indigenous Ways of Being, support First Nations self-determination and jurisdiction, and build on the work of those who came before.

Key takeaways
  • Act with urgency. Set clear timelines, roles and milestones. Children have already waited too long.
  • Make standards usable and achievable. Modernize the language, reflect current realities and resource implementation, including substantive equality and urban/on-reserve inequities.
  • Build in accountability. Give youth an ongoing role and measure progress through concrete goals and wholistic child-wellbeing outcomes.

AOPSI 101

An introduction to the Aboriginal Operational and Practice Standards and Indicators: where they came from and how they shape the day-to-day work of delegated child and family service agencies in BC.

Key takeaways
  • Practice standards set expectations for delegated agencies and provide the basis for audits.
  • Operational standards cover governance, administration, staffing, records and quality assurance.
  • Understanding AOPSI supports conversations about moving from delegated authority to Nations’ own laws.
